2. Link tracker installation procedure

Before proceeding with installation of a Link Tracker, here are a few pointers to remember:

  • Link Tracker is a feature that extends functionality of a Website Visitor Tracker
  • Each Website Visitor Tracker project can contain multiple Link Trackers
  • Each Link Tracker can only be used under the domain name that it with Website Visitor Tracker
  • With Link Tracker you can ONLY control access to your web pages through your website links. For example, if you have a link called “Contact Us” that links to a page called contactus.html, you can use the Link Tracker to control access to your contactus.html page by replacing your “Contact Us” link with a Link Tracker generated link

Note: In order to use the Link Tracker, you’ll first need to install and have an active Website Visitor Tracker for your website, as the Link Tracker is merely an extension added to each Website Visitor Tracker project. If you have not already done so, create and install a Website Visitor Tracker for your website.

Link Tracker Installation Steps:
  • Click on “My Projects” link located in the upper user menu
  • Click on the project’s name that you’d like to install the Link Tracker for
  • Select “Link Tracker” from the menu and you’ll be taken to a “Link Tracker Setup” page and then read the contents of the “Link Tracker Setup” page and then click on “ADD a NEW Link Tracker” link on the bottom of the page
  • Select an appropriate version of the Link Tracker that you’d like to use. For more details on the versions of a Link Tracker, refer to this page. If you have selected a PHP Version of the Link Tracker, download the file from your TraceMyIP account and upload it to your website’s primary home directory first then proceed to the next page
  • Select a link that you’d like to control on your website. This can for example be a link used in your website menu that shows up on every page of your website, such as a link named “Contact Us”. You will need to right click on the link and copy the full URL of this link. In this case, the full URL will look like “https://www.example.com/contactus.html”
  • Next, type in the name of your link (such as  “Contact Us”) into the “Primary Link Name” text box and paste the URL you have in your clipboard into the “Primary Link URL” box under your TraceMyIP Link Tracker page. Do not click on the “Create” button yet
  • Click on the “Configure” button located on the bottom of the page and you’ll be given the Link Tracker controller options.
  • Configure your Link Tracker controllers. For configuration guides see:
  • Click on the “Create” Button located at the bottom of the page
  • Navigate to your website and test the link that you have setup with a Link Tracker. To test it, don’t forget to disable [blocking of your own visits]  and create a simple controller rule that would include your own IP address to see how the Link Tracker actually works
